2. Ralph Samuelson invented water
Water Skiing skiing in 1922 at only 18-years old
when he tried using pinewood boards
with curved tips.
Before his pinewood discovery, there were
water skiing fails when people tried using snow
skis and other board-like objects.
3. BABE
Babe Ruth broke the existing home run world record
(1927) and his record remained untouched until 1961.
4. School Teams Were Formed For Students
School teams were not viewed as necessary
but when a push for sports came about during
the 1920s, it indefinitely became necessary.
5. Wimbledon Wonder
William "Big Bill" Tatem Tilden II
became the first American to win
a Wimbledon title in 1920.
Tennis in American then
became popular within the
states.
6. Sports for ALL
Sports that were previously unavailable to
the middle-class became available.
7. Olympics
1924-First Winter Olympic Games
Americans could now compete and be
recognized for their exceptional abilities in winter sports
nationally.
8. Football
The NFL was created in 1920
but at that time was known as
the American Professional
Football Association.
9. Woman Swimming Towards
Recognition
Caroline Ederle was the first woman to swim across the English
Channel. She was born in New York City. Pushes other females to
not try to be the stereotypical housewife and strive to be something
amazing.
10. Boxing
Jack Dempsey makes a statement for boxing.
His determination drove him to beat French boxer
Geroges Carpentier in 1921 and the Argentine boxer
Luis Angel Firpo in 1923 allowing him to withhold his
championship title from the world for years to come.
Boxing, therefore, became a popular sport.
11. The Derby
Steve Donoghue wins the derby 3 times in the
1920s and gets names the “Champion Jockey.”
12. Why were the 1920s different from
any other decade before it?
Sports were not as important to people during the
decades before it. Equality among rich and the middle
class was promoted by sports when they could play
amongst each other It shows the competitive spirit of that
era and the desire to be the best.
